This is my favorite image of The Annunciation. This was done by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and what makes this piece significant was the casualty of the scene. Most Annunciations are ornate and formal with Mary gilded in gold and her eagerness to accept God's plan for her. Instead this scene shows Mary in bed being awoken and surprised by the angel Gabriel. Not only is Mary surprised but her face shows fear and anxiety over what God has requested of this young women. I love this piece because it shows Mary's youth and humanness. I remember studying this in college and understanding why it is such an important part of Art History.

I had never seen that one before. It IS beautiful. Strong and vulnerable at the same time. Thanks for posting it.
